The Five Limbs
What a Panchang Is Made Of
Vaar
The weekday, each ruled by its own planet, from Sunday's Sun to Saturday's Saturn.
Tithi
The lunar day, measured by the angle between Moon and Sun. Fifteen tithis fill the waxing Shukla Paksha and fifteen the waning Krishna Paksha.
Nakshatra
The lunar mansion the Moon occupies, one of 27, each with its own nature and deity.
Yoga
A value derived from the combined longitudes of Sun and Moon, cycling through 27 yogas.
Karana
Half of a tithi. Eleven in all: seven repeat in a fixed cycle while four appear once each lunar month.
Daily Windows
Timings Worth Knowing
Rahu Kalam
A daily window traditionally kept free of new beginnings. Its clock time depends on sunrise, so it shifts with city and season.
Abhijit Muhurat
The midday window widely counted as favourable for starting work when no specific muhurat has been fixed.
Choghadiya
The stretch from sunrise to sunset and on to the next sunrise, divided into slots of changing nature, used for picking a practical window for travel and errands.
